Madumal Gunaratna was born in Sri Lanka and raised in Aotearoa (New Zealand), where a curiosity about how objects, spaces, and materials shape everyday life led him to study architecture at the University of Auckland. He graduated with First-Class Honours in a Master of Architecture and has since worked with some of the country’s leading design studios, including Knight Associates, Strachan Group Architects, and Atelier Aitken. As an NZRAB Registered Architect, his experience spans high-end residential interiors, commercial projects, and full-scale construction documentation.
Madumal’s approach to design is shaped by a wider interest in industrial design, woodworking, photography, fashion, and philosophy. These disciplines inform his pursuit of simplicity, clarity, and lasting impact. He strives to create spaces that feel grounded, intuitive, and quietly compelling.
