APPE SHED

In the rural haven of Oratia, Auckland, the Apple Shed pays homage to the area’s horticultural roots. Resting on a 1.9-hectare lifestyle block, the home draws inspiration from the simple geometry of apple crates, reimagined into timber-clad forms with galvanized roofs that blend seamlessly into the gentle northern slope and bush views.

Efficiently designed with no wasted space, the home contrasts soaring gable ceilings in living and bedroom areas with the intimacy of lower, flatter ceilings in hallways and utility spaces—a play of “compression and release.” Clad in bandsawn New Zealand macrocarpa, the exterior ages gracefully, while birch interiors bring warmth and refinement to the family sanctuary.

A relocated and refurbished cottage provides a separate dwelling for family, guests, or additional income, while an existing steel carport, thoughtfully restored, adds practicality.

The Apple Shed is a poetic balance of heritage, nature, and simplicity, rooted deeply in its rural context.
