23 ENGLAND STREET
The 23 England Street project involved extending and retrofitting a colonial villa for a young couple. In respect for heritage and planning regulations, the design celebrates the past while renewing it. The extension at the rear is clearly defined, introducing contemporary living to the home. Material richness and simplicity were key drivers, with concrete and oak floors, lime plaster walls, and blackbutt ceilings creating a balanced and warm atmosphere.
The design aims to feel open and inviting, with a large fireplace and expansive living, kitchen, and dining spaces. The home functions as a canvas for the furniture and art it houses, providing a stage for the individuals who occupy it. Large glazing opens the interior to the surrounding garden, connecting both spaces through a material continuity in the ceiling and soffit timbers, as well as mono-material internal and external walls.
For this project I was involved in the design, documentation and observation phases, with direction liaison with clients, consultants, contractors and suppliers.
